The GOP’s Baby Problem
The existential crisis facing today’s Republican Party has everything to do with incompatible policies it has often violently put in place, and which left to flourish, may well rob the party—and the nation—of its human future.
In the end, everything runs its end game. It’s true of companies, whole species, prosperity, ice ages, telomeres, star systems, foods, and empires, among countless other things.
It’s also, perhaps self-fulfillingly, true of the American Grand Old Party today, in some glaringly obvious ways.
Why and how, you ask?
The party that loathes immigrants and wants non-white, foreign-born farmhands and scientists alike deported somewhere—anywhere—en masse; that wants women out of the workforce and back in the kitchen, clad in maternity wear; that wants to increase tax burdens on the bottom 98% while providing relief to those in the top 2%; that wants GDP to soar alongside retail prices and housing equity in ways that bear no resemblance to the costs of bringing products to market; that wants all checks and balances on market capitalism to be demolished; and that wants to wipe funding for housing, education, healthcare, childcare, work leave, and elder care off the…
